What is GRE?

What is GRE?

The GRE (Graduate Record Exam) is required for admission to U.S. and Canadian graduate schools. . The test though does not test any specific knowledge in a certain subject. Rather, it tests the "mental intelligence" as well as the ability to make decision under time a time constraint.

What are the various sections of this test?

The test consists of three sections namely

Verbal, Quantitative and AWA.In addition to these three sections, there may be one experimental section, that looks pretty much like the other sections, but does not add to your score. But trying to identify this section is not advised as that might cost you your chances.
A test-taker may get any of the following GRE CAT combination:

  • AWA (Issue-Argument) – Verbal (experimental) – Verbal (Real) – Quantitative
  • AWA (Issue-Argument) – Verbal (Real) - Verbal (experimental) – Quantitative
  • AWA (Issue-Argument) - Verbal (Real) – Quantitative (experimental) - Quantitative (Real)
  • AWA (Issue-Argument) - Verbal (Real) – Quantitative (Real)- Quantitative (Experimental)
A test taker may also get a direct test pattern without an experimental section.
  • AWA – Verbal – Quantitative
  • AWA - Quantitative - Verbal.
Who Conducts this test?

The GRE is conducted by the Education Testing Services group (ETS). For now, the test can be taken all the year round. From coming year, however, there will be fixed dates. The fees for the test are US$140 (Rs 7,000).

Why GRE?

In addition to being an admission criterion, schools often use GRE scores to determine eligibility for merit-based grants and fellowships, as well as teaching and research assistantships programs. The large state schools establish cut-off points for GRE scores to limit the application pool, while others use GRE scores to directly determine how much financial support you receive.

Yes ofcourse you can make it to many good institutions without appearing for the GRE exam.
A good IELTS score will certainly be enough to get you a great institution.
