Whenever the MBA College ranking season is on, multiple organizations come up with different rankings based on multiple parameters and priorities.

The important question for any MBA aspirant then is.. which of these rankings are genuine and should be trusted?

It is difficult to conclusively say if any of these rankings are based on perfect parameters, given the subjective nature of parameters used by most of them.
It makes sense though, to look at the average rankings of top colleges as published by multiple sources.

We have here tried to do just that, consolidating the rankings from around 8 different sources, and raking the Top 15 MBA Colleges in India based on that. Hope this helps clear some doubts for all the MBA aspirants out there.. :)

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) and Singapore Management University ( SMU) have signed an MoU to collaborate on conducting training programs and research relating to international trade and business from an Asian perspective.

Under the partnership, the two institutions will jointly design and launch management development programs as well as offer postgraduate certificate programs in areas related to international trade, business and management.

Both parties also agreed to conduct joint research, case writing in the area of international trade and business, especially related to the Asian region. The MoU also covers student exchanges between the two institutions.

"With the shift in growth and centre of economic gravity towards emerging economies in Asia, it is becoming increasingly important for international trade professionals to be trained both inside and outside India to take full advantage of India's business opportunities. That Singapore is a trading and logistics hub, as well as a major financial centre in the region makes the SMU-IIFT or Singapore-Delhi educational axis a good mechanism for fostering both education and trade," said Professor Srivastava, SMU's provost and deputy president (academic affairs) in a statement.

IIFT director K. T. Chacko said, "The joining of hands between Singapore Management University and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, India would go a long way in enriching the research and collaborative educational programmes. SMU's academic strength and in depth understanding of South East Asia and IIFT's core strength in International Business will prove a win-win situation for both."

Despite increasing number of MBA options available to aspirants, the interest in MBA education has not been much encouraging in India over last few years. This has resulted in most of the MBA colleges, excluding Top 40-50 B-schools, struggling to fill their seats and some even filing for closure of their management programmes.

MBA institutes are coming up with new programmes, innovative admission schemes and big promises. But, none seems to be working in their favour. So what are the corrective measures?

Experts believe that concern over quality of management education has deepened amongst all the stakeholders including Educators, Aspirants and Policymakers. They feel that promoting the quality of MBA education is the only way to succeed for B-schools in India.

In this special column, Dr Rajan Saxena, Vice Chancellor & Distinguished Professor Of Marketing at SVKM`s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, talks on why quality is of supreme importance and what Indian B-schools should be doing to uplift quality of their education.

Quality assurance in Management Education

We are transitioning through critical moments in the global economic history, corporate governance and political systems. It is a time when globalization has come to be associated with entrepreneurship, innovation & redundancy of time and geography. It has also become synonymous with exploitation of resources – natural, human, ecology and markets. It is a time when despite the imperative of globalization, we see the growth of strong nationalist sentiments and emergence of new block of nations acting as power centers.

It is a time when the corporate and society’s confidence in MBA is at low ebb. As we all know, MBA has come to be associated with global financial meltdown of 2008. It is in this context that quality and excellence in management education has become paramount.

Promoting Quality for Management Schools

The way forward for improving the quality in management education in India is to shift focus of regulation from approval to accreditation and self disclosures. The current initiatives of Government of India to set up National Commission of Higher Education and Research as also make accreditation mandatory are commendable.

Quality in education is about the learner experience. Does a learner achieve his or her desired objectives of knowledge acquisition and skill development? If learning experience is a goal, institutions will have to focus on programs, people and processes. They will have to define their input – throughput – output process. One would have to move away from the accounting perspective to an institutional development perspective. As was mentioned, education is all about developing learnability and inquisitive minds among individuals who can relate to their environment in a holistic manner. Hence, my view is that unless and until all the processes, systems and structure embrace quality, it would be difficult for an institution to develop the above breed of learners and managers.

Student Quality

In the quality model student quality has to be a starting point. Student quality is not just a function of an admission test as stipulated by AICTE but the result of a combination of factors like marketing of programs to desired student markets and the process used to evaluate learnability, people skills and fit with program objectives and institutional goal.

Therefore, the institutions need to focus on quality of the admission test, and evaluation of background of the aspirants and assess whether it matches the learning goals of the program.

Faculty Quality

It is not adequate to have good quality students only. Institutions need good quality faculty also. Faculty is the Achilles’ heel in management education. But there is a dearth of quality faculty in the country. Faculty quality is about faculty’s education qualifications, experience and attitude. It is about conceptualization and relational skills individual brings to work. Understanding of pedagogy and ‘how and where to use different pedagogical tools’ is also important for a good faculty.

Program Quality

A good program is at the heart of learning strategy. The program quality is defined by its learning objectives, relevance of the contents and its overall architecture. It is also about assessment of the student through the program. The rigor in the program does not come through a very large number of subjects and credits but how it is delivered. The pedagogy defines not just the quality but the rigor in the program. Program Quality is also about the assurance of learning which is about its evaluation process.

Systems Quality

The Systems Quality relates to the overall quality of academic, student support, assessment and administrative systems of the institution. It is about academic administrative system of continuously reviewing progress of the program and students in the program.

Process Quality

Here the focus of the Institution will have to be on the various academic, administrative, financial, human resources and student processes. Investment in development of processes that enhances transparency and equity in the organization is important.

Governance Quality

Governance is about how the policies are framed, administered and monitored over a period of time. In the context of management institutions, it is important to consider the extent of faculty involvement in all these areas.

Relationship Quality

Finally, it is about how institutions develop relationship with its stakeholders, namely industry, society and the alumni.

Hence, quality in management education is about the overall institutional quality and not just the program quality or statutory approvals.

It's good news for MBA graduates this year.Rising from a slumber after the recession, some 79 per cent companies plan to hire fresh management graduates this year, compared to 72 per cent in 2011.

On an average, the number of MBA freshers per firm has also increased from 13 last year to 17 this year, according to a survey by NGO Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) and administrator of GMAT exam.

The regional variations in accordance with the exonomic mood is very much visible though.

Whereas companies in the Asia-Pacific region and the United States expect continued growth in hiring in 2012 for all management graduates, European companies project that 2012 hiring levels will be similar to those in 2011.

Among those hiring in 2012, 36 per cent firms will hire due to increased workload, and 14 per cent because of increased profit.

Small companies — fewer than 1,000 employees — account for the largest proportional increase in demand for MBA graduates.

According to the survey, work experience and internship are main factors while selecting candidates.

“Recruiters, while selecting a candidate for interview, often considers the candidate’s work experience. The top three criteria include job function, industry and years of experience,” the report stated.

The most popular industries in which the MBA class of 2012 searched for jobs were products and services, consulting, finance and accounting, irrespective of the course type.

ETS, the creator of the TOEFL test, and Hobsons, the leader in recruitment, communication, and student success solutions for colleges and universities, have announced to showcase the much anticipated TOEFL Search Service, an online tool connecting higher education institutions with prospective international students from around the world at the NAFSA 2012 Annual Conference & Expo as more than 8,000 international education professionals convene in Houston next week, though, TOEFL Search Service will officially be launched only in July 2012.

The TOEFL Search Service is the first tool to tap TOEFL test-taker data for student recruitment purposes. It will offer admissions officials access to an expanding database of more than 200,000 recent TOEFL test takers who have opted in to learn more about higher education opportunities abroad.

Admissions officers can search the user-friendly database using up to 26 criteria to customize results and connect with potential targeted applicants. Major features of the service, which will be powered by Hobsons, include:

Web-based search capabilities that can be automated to secure real-time data about prospective students, driving timely and accurate recruitment decision-making

Data that easily integrates with leading campus management systems, enabling easy electronic, print or telephone contact with potential students, streamlining outreach efforts

Insight into the applicant pool by customizing search results by an institution's preferred criteria, such as country or region of the world, TOEFL scores, planned level of study, planned date of enrollment, or desired field of study to ensure recruitment efforts map directly to enrollment goals.

From next month, prospective business school aspirants who sit down to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test, or GMAT, may notice something different: Instead of a three-part exam testing verbal and mathematical skills and analytic writing ability, there will be a four-part exam with a new section devoted to integrated reasoning.

The new section is designed to test the ability to evaluate and synthesize data from various sources presented in a number of different formats, and to predict plausible and probable outcomes. It is also partly there for security purposes, as reports of cheating have risen.

According to Alex Chisholm, director of statistical analysis for the Graduate Management Admission Council, or GMAC,students from the Asia-Pacific region are expected to make up 61 percent of the international applicants for full-time M.B.A. programs in United States. He added that the new integrated reasoning section was intended partly in order to help assess the new, more global, candidate pool.

Ashok Sarathy, GMAC’s vice president in charge of the testing program, said the exam had undergone “a continuous evolution” since it was introduced in February 1954 by a group of nine business schools in the United States.

They included those at Harvard, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern.

Unlike the G.R.E., which is offered in electronic and paper-based versions, the GMAT is a computer-adaptive test, meaning that questions answered correctly are followed by more difficult questions, while mistaken answers are followed by easier questions. Also, unlike the G.R.E. or other standardized tests like that SAT, the GMAT does not allow skipping questions or modifying previous answers.

The final score is given on a scale of 200 to 800 derived solely from the mathematical and verbal portions of the test. In 2010, the mean score was 544, while 720 was the median score for students admitted to Harvard and the Wharton School, which is part of the University of Pennsylvania. The new section, which will be graded on a scale of one to eight, joins the analytical writing section, graded on a scale of zero to six, as “a separate data point” outside the composite score.

In part, the new section on integrative reasoning was a response to demand from business schools “asking for a way to evaluate a new set of skills,” Mr. Sarathy said.

Apart from UGAT , a national level examination conducted by All India Management Association for admission to various professional courses in leading institutes of the country,KU will also accept CAT/MAT scores for various programmes offered by it.
“This is in line with the Vice- Chancellor Prof Talat’s vision to provide a platform to the students wherein they can appear in national level tests so that they are eligible for admission to various prestigious programmes being offered by the renowned institutions of the country,” said a KU statement.
But UGAT still remains the primary source of admissions to KU,as stated by Director Business School Prof. Shabir A Bhat, who said this examination was recognised and most of the prestigious institutions across the country take the UGAT score.
It is pertinent to mention that last week MAT examination was also conducted at the University of Kashmir by AIMA.
The director said that this year the admission to the MBA/MFC/IMBA programme shall be made on the basis of MAT/CAT/UGAT scores obtained by the students.

Time is of the essence, they say. There are few areas in life in which this cliché is more pertinent than it is to the GRE.

Surely , clever time saving strategies, cannot fill in any deficits of knowledge. However, they can help you perform much better on the anxiety-provoking GRE.

Attempt the easier Questions first:

Try attempting the easier questions first before diving in for the long passage in the verbal section.

It would certainly help you score more.
Though it is always tempting to go on sequentially, but you have to try and spot out the easier questions first.

Skip the tough Text Completions:

Feel free to read it, and if you get it right away, great! If not, do not spend time stewing in the muddle of sentences. Later, if you have time to come back to it, your brain should be more likely to discern the paragraph’s meaning (after all, you have already read it once). If you don’t have time, don’t worry. That monster Text Completion is worth the same number of points of the easy one-blanker.

Try to come back to a tough Quants Problem:

It is great to try an come back to the tough Quants problem if time permits you to do so.
It is so because,if you have already read the question once, its quite possible that you might be able to crack the question faster when you come back to it later.
The test taker who has shared his experience, had taken the PTE Academic Test on the 2nd of May,8 A.M.
We have compiled hereunder the detailed suggestions that might be of help to any PTE Academic aspirant:--

Suggestions for the test:

1. Go through the online tutorial for a start - pearsonpte.com/PTEAcademic/Documents/PTEA_Tutorial/PTEA_Tutorial.html

2. PTE Academic Test Taking Strategies give a very good picture of the questions on the real exam.
pearsonpte.com/TestMe/Preparing/Pages/PTEAcademicTestTakingStrategies.aspx

3. Exam tips can be obtained from

pearsonpte.com/TestMe/Documents/PTEAcademic_TestTips.pdf

4. Buy the PTE Academic Official Guide. The CD available with the book is extremely useful. It has 3 tests in full. Take up each test like the real exam by timing yourself strictly. This will help you greatly on your exam.

By just following the above points, you can easily get a very good score. There are online and offline practice tests available too. I did not take them up. So, I cannot comment on them.

If the University to which you are applying accepts PTE Academic as a Test of Foreign Language, I would highly recommend taking the PTE. The exam has a great variety of question types, testing you in many aspects of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

Hope this post helps all you guys out there who are required to take an English Language Proficiency exam. All the best!!
I appeared for NMAT, CAT, XAT, CMAT, CET and SNAP. But was able to convert Narsee Monjee to a final call.
5. How would you compare CMAT’s difficulty level to other MBA entrance exams?
I would say that the toughest paper this year was CET, considering the content of the paper. Competition wise CAT of course is the toughest paper. But content wise CET was the toughest. And then I would rate CAT and XAT at the same level. XAT had some tough questions but competition level was slightly less. After CAT, XAT, I would rate NMAT and then SNAP and finally CMAT.

6. CMAT 2012 was conducted for the first time. There must have been certain confusion regarding the format of the paper, difficulty level and level of competition. How did you cope up with that?
Actually when CAT results came I was a bit disappointed, so I thought that OK JBIMS is one of my choices and there is an all India quota for JBIMS for which you can apply through CMAT. So I filled CMAT form and started preparing for it but later on I got call from a number of colleges so I did not get time. but I did make efforts for general knowledge and for logical reasoning and because they were going to conduct it for the first time no one knew the kind of questions they will ask but we were thinking that most of the state level entrance exams have been trashed for CMAT this year and thus the difficulty level and kind of questions that will be asked would be similar to those state level exams. So my CET preparation helped me in following CMAT.

7. Do you have any clue about the range of score JBIMS is accepting through CMAT?
The procedure is like you have to apply for CET also. CET has its own process of GD/PI and in that all the aspirants who have applied for the exam are called. After the GD/ PI results are out a consolidated score of your written score as well as GD/ PI score are considered and then they see whether I am eligible for JBIMS or not.

This year they have allowed admission through CMAT only through all India quota but from next year CET would be scrapped and they would be considering only CMAT scores.

8. What was your preparation strategy for CMAT?
For CMAT I did not joined any classes, but for CET I had joined coaching classes which helped me in CMAT, because most of the questions that they had asked I had already faced in my mock tests.

9. Do you think that leaving job to prepare for MBA entrance exams is a good idea?
No, ideally people should try and get into some college while working. Everything has its pros and cons. I left my job because I was not able to concentrate both on my work as well as my preparation. In a way I was not able to do justice to my role in that company, although my performance has been exceptional in TCS, but I was not able to concentrate. But then in the interview and all I was asked why you left your job, you would have prepared while working. So I would suggest people that try to get into a b-school while working otherwise this can go against you in the interview. This was one of the reasons why I was rejected at XLRI.

The GRE Program is now introducing what it calls a 'ScoreSelect' option that allows test takers to decide which test scores to send to the institutions they designate. Described by GRE ”as one more enhancement to its more test-taker friendly platform,” essentially allows test takers to hide weaker scores from admissions officials and to send the scores they feel reflect their personal best.

To be made available starting July 2012, 'ScoreSelect' builds on the momentum that started with the 2011 launch of the test-taker friendly GRE revised General Test, which test takers worldwide responded to with great enthusiasm. “The ScoreSelect option focuses on helping test takers succeed on the road to an advanced degree because they can approach test day with more confidence,” said James Wimbush, Dean of the University Graduate School at Indiana University, and 2011–2012 GRE Board Chair, in a statement.

Typically, a test taker’s scores from all his or her tests are sent to the schools to which they apply. Business schools usually take the highest score achieved, but taking a test multiple times and scoring poorly could impact an admissions officer’s view of a candidate’s application.

GRE said that test takers can now select from several options.

On test day, when viewing their scores at the test center, they can select the:

· ScoreSelect Most Recent option — Send their scores from their current test administration (FREE).
· ScoreSelect All option — Send their scores from all administrations in the last 5 years (FREE).

Test takers can decide which option to use for each of their 4 FREE score reports.

After test day, test takers can send Additional Score Reports for a fee and select:

· ScoreSelect Most Recent option — Send their scores from their most recent test administration.
· ScoreSelect All option — Send their scores from all administrations in the last 5 years.
· ScoreSelect Any option — Send their scores from one OR many test administrations in the last 5 years.
Scores for a test administration must be reported in their entirety.

The new ScoreSelect option will be available for both the GRE revised General Test and GRE Subject Tests, and can be used by anyone with reportable scores from the last five years.

The Pearson Group has announced a strategic partnership with JJL Overseas Education, a leading overseas education consulting and service company in China, to promote its English Language Proficiency test--Pearson Test of English Academic in China.
Developed by the world's largest education publishing group, PTE Academic is a computer-based international English language test. Compared with TOEFL and IELTS, PTE Academic is more flexible on test sessions and faster at returning scores. Test takers can register a test 24 hours in advance and get the scores within five business days. Therefore, an entire testing process can be completed within just seven days. This speed enables students to meet their institution and visa application deadlines faster. Moreover, students can send their best scores to schools free of charge.

Two years after entering the market, PTE Academic has been recognized by 32 countries and accepted for admissions by more than two thousands programs. Its acceptance includes top UK and US universities, including London Business School, Harvard University and Yale University, as well as the government organizations.
Established in 1999, JJL overseas education is a flagship agent in China. It has established cooperation with more than 1,400 universities and colleges in 23 countries. Each year, more than 30,000 Chinese students start their overseas studies through JJL.
"The collaboration with JJL is an important part of Pearson's expansion plans in the Asia-Pacific region," said Emma Stubbs, senior vice president of Pearson's Language Testing Division, at a press conference held in Beijing on Monday.
JJL will be a key distributor for the Official Guide to PTE Academic and will provide consulting services. As a result of this collaboration, tens of thousands of students who use JJL's services will have direct and fast access to PTE Academic.
Besides the testing and overseas education services, both sides will also expand their cooperation to fields such as publishing, training and international exchanges.
Chinese students' overseas study boom has continued in recent years. The annual growth rate since 2009 has been around 25 percent. The number of students studying abroad is expected to reach 400,000 by the end of 2012, and surpass 500,000 by 2013.
"China has always been an important market for Pearson and one we wish to grow and expand in, and we hope our partnership with JJL will help us both achieve our ambitions," said Emma Stubbs.
Pearson is the world's leading learning company with 41,000 employees in more than 70 countries and regions. Headquartered in London, UK, it owns the Penguin Group, the Financial Times Group and a wide range of educational businesses.
If you like your work and need to develop more technical expertise, then a Masters in Mechanical or Industrial engineering would be the right move.

If you are taking on more decision making responsibilities, prefer to shift to the management of operations and strategic planning roles, then MBA would lead to such a career progress. You are eligible to join either program , as both are offered by most universities in any country. You may pursue a Masters or an MBA in the discipline that interests you the most like Marketing, Finance, Supply Chain management, Human resource management, Operations Management . MBA programs abroad accept a range of work experience but generally the higher the rank of the institute the more years of experience it requires. Most reputed MBA schools abroad require two to three years of managerial experience after the first degree. MBA programs abroad accept a range of work experience but generally the higher the rank of the institute the more years of experience it requires. Most reputed MBA schools abroad require two to three years of managerial experience after the first degree. Some of the more reputed Business school which offer both Masters in different business related subjects as well as MBA programs (for those with experience) are offered in USA at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Stanford, Tufts, Rochester, Southern California, Cincinnati, Pittsburg , University of California-Berkeley, UCLA, University of Syracuse, SUNY at Buffalo, etc. Canada: Ontario University, University of Alberta McGill University, Queens University, Trent University, University of New Brunswick, University of Toronto, University of Regina, University of Victoria, University of Waterloo, York University. UK: University of Strathclyde, City University, Aston, Bath, and Southampton; Australia: Universities of Melbourne, Sydney, RMIT; NTU and NUS In Singapore; ( if any), together with IELTS or the TOEFL . Some may require the GMAT as well. Applications to programs in any country must be done a few months ahead of point of entry. Most reputed institutes require two to three letters of recommendation, academic records of last three to four years ; a convincing statement of purpose which explains the connection of your program of study with your future career goals, highlights of your strengths and achievements, quality and quantity of relevant work experience Annual cost of tuition and living for most programs would be range from Rs 15 Lakhs to Rs 25 lakhs per year, depending on the institute; while it extends from Rs. 3 lakhs per year to Rs 10 Lkahs per year in Indiadepending on the institute . scholarships are competitive and you cannot depend on these as a means to fund your education. Investment in education abroad is a personal choice as it is an overall learning experience, but equally good academic options are available in India as well. You must get in touch with people working and living in different countries to get a realistic view of employment and immigration opportunities in different countries to make an informed selection for higher education. *No university or institute, or country guarantees job for international students . Y*ou have to be proactive in using all resources like direct contact with companies, career cell of the university, net based recruitment services to joining placement agencies, contacts of families and friends for the best job options in India and abroad.
